"Just as this piece of firewood was divided into two parts," she explains, "so a sentence is divided into two parts." These two parts are the SUBJECT and the PREDICATE. The SUBJECT tells us what a sentence is about, and the PREDICATE tells us something about the subject. For example: The axe splits the wood. THE AXE is the SUBJECT because it tells us what the sentence is about. SPLITS THE WOOD is the PREDICATE because it tells us what the axe does. Another example: This wood is dirty. THIS WOOD is the SUBJECT because it tells us what the sentence is about. IS DIRTY is the PREDICATE because it tells us something about the wood.
