This jaw-dropping architectural wonder has been in the making for over 140 years! Yup, you heard that right—it’s still under construction! But what makes this Roman Catholic basilica so fascinating is not just its towering beauty but the stories behind it. This incredible church was designed by Antoni Gaudí, a genius who dedicated the last 15 years of his life to bringing it to life. One of the reasons for the slow construction is that Gaudí insisted the church be built from public donations. Today, the construction is funded primarily through tourism and donations. No government funding has been used for its construction. Every spire, every detail tells a story... and there's an incredible amount lot of details in this building. Like I said in previous videos, the architecture in Spain is on a whole' nother level. Antoni Gaudi... is by far the Godfather of Spanish Architecture. and The Sagrada Familia is definitely his masterpiece. Gaudi is perhaps the most shining star in the city of Barcelona. The city is literally defined by all his architectural wonders found throughout the city. Almost every postcard and tourist shirt showcases at least one of his many designed buildings. Sadly like most architects of the mega cathedrals in Europe, he never got to see his finished masterpiece. He dedicated the last 15 years of his life to bring this Basilica to life. The Sagrada Familia’s construction began way back in 1882, and while it’s still not finished after 140 years, there’s so much to take in. That's why we recommend getting a tour. There are too many details in this heavenly building... It would be a shame to miss any of them. The Sagrada Familia was conceived as a Catholic basilica and remains an active place of worship. It’s dedicated to the Holy Family. The church holds regular mass, and religious events are celebrated here. The Design is the most unique among all of the mega cathedrals of the world. It is composed of 18 massive spires that symbolize important figures in Christianity: • 12 spires represent the apostles. • 4 spires represent the evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). • 1 spire is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. • The tallest spire, at 566 feet (173 meters), represents Jesus Christ. Gaudí designed this spire to be just shorter than Montjuïc Hill the tallest hill in Barcelona, to ensure that the church remains subservient to nature, as Gaudí believed man’s creations should never surpass God’s. I wonder what he would think of the Burj al Arab in Dubai at 689 ft (210M). That's a whole 'nother 123 feet. When completed, the Sagrada Familia’s central Jesus Christ spire, will rise to 566 feet (173 meters), this will make it the tallest religious structure in Europe. When we went there they were finishing up the last spire. The builders are estimating the Sagrada Familia will be completed sometime in 2026. That is coming close.! The Entrance of the Church is clad in the Nativity facade that celebrates the joy of Christ’s birth, filled with symbols of life and nature. It is filled with concrete sculptures of Scenes of Jesus’ Early Life: The Sculptures include the Annunciation, Visitation, and Adoration of the Magi. Gaudí incorporated detailed carvings of animals, plants, and natural elements to symbolize creation and life. I really like how the facade tells Jesus' story in 3D. It was quite awe inspiring.
