Ric was a seasoned long-distance runner, even running the Boston Marathon, so when he started experiencing shortness of breath and a decreased ability to exercise, he knew something was wrong. After an examination, Ric learned he needed double bypass surgery and later an aortic valve replacement. Both were performed by a Pennsylvania Hospital cardiac surgeon. His surgeon took the time to answer Ric’s questions even drawing diagrams to make sure Ric understood what and how the surgery would be performed. 36 days after his heart surgery, Ric went on his first half-a-mile run. His care team was with him every step of the way. As Ric says, “the people at Pennsylvania Hospital are what I most remember about my stay there. It didn’t feel like they were performing a job, it felt like they actually cared about me, my health, my recovery.”
