In this interview, filmed in 2019, Explainer TV Senior Associate Producer Seana talks to a AAAS-Lemelson Invention Ambassador Stephen Key about open innovation and his process of invention. As part of the Explainer TV program at NYSCI's Friedman Center; youth producers have an opportunity to interview a range of professionals working across STEM fields. Stephen Key is also a licensing expert, One Simple Idea author, lifelong entrepreneur and inventRight cofounder. This interview was conducted at the lecture, 'Engineering Academic Environments to Foster Invention and Innovation', by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). More about the event, 'Engineering Academic Environments to Foster Invention and Innovation': In our tech-saturated era, an abundance of scientific and engineering knowledge risks being left at the bench — knowledge that is imperative in improving the future of our health, environment, economies, and societies. Academic institutions can play a critical role. By training and educating highly skilled and motivated experts to translate their extensive knowledge into practical, real world solutions, they can create an environment for invention and innovation to flourish. The City College of New York Master’s in Translational Medicine, in partnership with the AAAS-Lemelson Invention Ambassadors program, these were the topics of discussion: 1) the way academic institutions can promote opportunities for students and faculty to invent and develop entrepreneurial endeavors 2) the ways invention itself can open doors for more people to become inventors. More about Stephen Key: Stephen Key is the world’s leading expert in licensing consumer product ideas and a 2018-2019 American Association for the Advancement of Science-Lemelson Invention Ambassador. He achieved repeat success as an independent inventor, including defending his intellectual property against one of the largest toy companies in federal court. The innovative packaging solution he brought to market is protected by more than 20 patents and received 15 industry awards, including two Edisons. inventRight, the coaching program he cofounded in 1999, has helped people from more than 60 countries license their product ideas. He explains how to take advantage of the power of open innovation on his popular YouTube channel inventRight TV and in Forbes, Inc., and Entrepreneur.
