The Southern African Development Community (SADC) comes to Harare in August 2024 for its Annual Summit. Zimbabwe is about the assume the Chair in its turn on rotation. In recent years, many commentators have begun to question the commitment of the SADC countries to its Treaty and its Protocols. Key in the criticisms has been the commitment by SADC to the Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, with the treatment of Zimbabwean elections being a stark example. The central question for many SADC citizens is what are the consequences of a country in apparent breach of the Founding (now amended) SADC treaty? Is there still any commitment to the establishment of a common economic community or will SADC remain a loose confederation of independent states, collaborating when it suits each country but demanding sovereignty when it equally suits?
