John Martin, the new owner of Smirnoff Vodka, which at the time was struggling to get a foothold in the American spirits market, was brainstorming with the owner of the Cock & Bull, Jack Morgan, about ways to sell both the vodka and a new ginger beer that Morgan had recently bought into. When Sophie Berezinski, a Russian copper merchant entered the bar trying to sell her copper mugs they had a flash of inspiration and designed a simple cocktail, incorporating all of their products.
