In this video I create a generative melody and drum sequence driven by the NLC Stochaos, and using the NLC Tinkle for drum sounds. Stochaos is a stepped cv and gate generator, perfect for creating generative melody and drum gate sequences all on one module. It generates gates and control voltages based on pink noise, chaos, or pink noise and chaos combined. A switch selects between the three variations. The base idea for the circuit came from a 1980 patent: US4208938 Random Rhythm Pattern Generator. To operate, just feed a gate to IN, and add a reset if you like. Use the switch to select if you want full random (STOCH), chaos, or random vs chaos (BOTH). You’ll hear in the demo that there are marked differences. To my ear, the chaos setting is more tightly patterned both rhythmically and melodically. Everything else is an output. PINK and CHAOS are drawn off the internal random and chaotic sub-circuits. CV1 And CV2 are fed to a difference rectifier to get CV3 and CV4, so CV3 will be mainly negative voltage. 1-8 are gate outs, so is STOCH. Tinkle is a drum module with four retro sounds and an onboard distortion circuit. In my demo patch I’m feeding Stochaos a clock out of Pam’s New Workout, and taking the resulting CV out of Stochaos into an attenuator (to limit the note range - I adjust this a couple times) and then a quantizer. From there it goes into Plaits (whose timbre, morph, and harmonics are being modulated by an NLC Triple Sloths). The main and aux outputs of Plaits then run into an NLC LPG (low pass gate - an amazing module, highly recommended for tone shaping, and one I’ll be bringing into the shop soon). LPG outputs into Beads for some reverb (not using granular in this one) and then out to the mixer. The drums are Stochaos into NLC Tinkle and then into NLC Delay No More and Starlab (for a touch of spacey ambiance), then out to the mixer.
