Wide of demonstration STORYLINE: Greek riot police have fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of firefighters demonstrating in central Athens to demand permanent employment status. No injuries or arrests have been reported. The incident took place on Thursday near the Finance Ministry, where protesting firefighters employed on short-term contracts were planning to hold an all-night vigil. Protesters tried to break a police cordon outside the building, and officers responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Earlier, more than 1,000 firefighters protested peacefully outside the Labour Ministry in Athens. Again, riot police fired tear gas to disperse them. Some 5,500 Greek firefighters are employed on short term contracts. Their union accuses the government of breaking a pledge to grant them permanent job status.
