((I was a few seconds too late to record, so I didn't catch the legendary kentongan's part in the beginning, which normally being broadcasted along with adzan on television/ radio in Indonesia.)) Back then, before there was any megaphone, bedug was used by Indonesian mosques to call for prayer. The bedug normally was hit in an increasingly rapid pace and it can be heard up to hundreds meter or within a village. The name itself, bedug, comes from how it sounds "dug, dug dug". Nowadays, the tradition is still being preserved in some big/ old mosques. The bedug is hit rhythmically right before adzan. This time, the video is recorded in Masjid Agung Sunan Ampel in Surabaya as the oldest mosque (established in 1421) in East Java and has the tomb complex of Sunan Ampel. He's one of Wali Songo (nine saints of Islam in Indonesia, especially Java). They're famous for conveying Islam to pre-Islamic society by blending Islam with local culture. It's also said that bedug was commonly used in their era. Since they're also actively involved in promoting bedug in mosques.
