Named after the Greek words ‘hydro’, which means water, and ‘statikos’, which translates to ‘solid’, this pressure test uses compressed air as hydraulic fluid. It may also be referred to as leak testing or a pressure drop test. Essentially, hydrostatic testing works by filling the cylinder up with water, removing the air in the cylinder, and pressuring the system higher than the cylinder’s design pressure limit. A reduction in applied pressure, leakage via the joints or vessel deformation are all signs of subpar performance.
