procedure of Hydrostatic testing for cylinders Hydrostatic testing is a process in which pressure vessels (like cylinders) are examined for overall integrity and the presence of leaks. The internal and external condition of the cylinder is inspected and then taken above its working pressure to test for any punctures or damaged seals. Named after the Greek words ‘hydro’, which means water, and ‘statikos’, which translates to ‘solid’, this pressure test uses compressed air as hydraulic fluid. It may also be referred to as leak testing or a pressure drop test. Essentially, hydrostatic testing works by filling the cylinder up with water, removing the air in the cylinder, and pressuring the system higher than the cylinder’s design pressure limit. A reduction in applied pressure, leakage via the joints or vessel deformation are all signs of subpar performance.
