First Time Sailing the New Boat, O'Day Mariner 19

Our first time out in our new to us sailboat and the weather turned scary. We sailed across the lake in beautiful weather. It started to cloud up by the time we docked. We went to dinner and came back to a lot of wind. Having a false sense of security at the dock, we decided to tie up the boat the best we could and wait out what we thought was a brief storm. The storm was bigger than we expected and when the waves came in, they were violent. They thrashed the boat around so much; two of the three bow lines were gone when Tim went to check on it. One snapped and one ripped a cleat right off the boat. We almost lost the boat to the shore. The stormed calmed a little and we got off the dock and anchored in a more sheltered place until the rest of the storm passed. We should have gotten off the dock and moved to an anchorage right away. Lesson learned. Side note: Minn Kota trolling motors work after being fully submerged. It got tossed off the mount and was hanging off the boat. It motored us back across the lake.
