What Is Arweave? Arweave stands as a decentralized storage network committed to providing a platform for perpetual data storage. Often referred to as "a collectively owned hard drive that never forgets," the network is primarily home to "the permaweb" — an enduring, decentralized web hosting various community-driven applications and platforms. To delve deeper into this project, take a look at our comprehensive analysis of Arweave. Utilizing its native cryptocurrency, AR, the Arweave network compensates "miners" for the perpetual storage of its data. Initially introduced as Archain in August 2017, the project rebranded as Arweave in February 2018 and officially launched in June 2018. Founders of Arweave: Arweave's creation is attributed to Sam Williams and William Jones, both Ph.D. candidates at the University of Kent. Williams brought expertise in decentralized and distributed systems, having developed the HydrOS operating system as part of his studies. Jones specialized in graph theory and neural networking. While Williams remained dedicated to the company, Jones departed in mid-2018 after completing his Ph.D. Inspired by a concept during a Scottish mountain hike, Williams collaborated with Jones to develop the technical intricacies. Arweave launched a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in January 2020, comprising core community members, to amplify network and ecosystem development. Arweave's Unique Aspects: Arweave strives to ensure the "collective ability to store and share information between individuals and across time to new generations," as outlined in its yellow paper. This goal is materialized through the permaweb, a foundational layer built upon the "blockweave" — a variant of blockchain technology. In blockweave, each block links to the previous one and a random earlier block. This design motivates miners to store more data to access older blocks and earn rewards. Arweave concentrates on fostering a sustainable ecosystem. The introduction of "profit sharing tokens" in June 2020 enables developers to earn dividends from network transaction fees. Incubators and programs like "Boost" support permaweb-based app development. Notably, Arweave secured $8.3 million funding from Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, and Coinbase Ventures in March 2020. Circulating Arweave Tokens: Arweave boasts a maximum token supply of 66 million AR, with 55 million minted during the genesis block in June 2018. Additional 11 million AR will be gradually introduced as block rewards. Token distribution includes a pre-sale event (10.8% of initial supply), public sales (7.1% and 1.1%), private sale (19.5%), advisor allocation (2.9%), team (13%), ecosystem development (19.1%), and future use (26.5%). Arweave's Network Security: Arweave relies on a modified blockchain known as "blockweave," featuring the "proof-of-access" consensus algorithm. This modified proof-of-work algorithm links new blocks to the immediate prior and a random earlier block, incentivizing miners to store additional data to access old blocks for mining. The RandomX mining protocol underwent successful audits by cybersecurity firms in August 2019. The project plans to implement a new mining algorithm, SPoRA, in early 2021. Purchasing Arweave: AR can be acquired on cryptocurrency exchanges like MXC.COM, Bilaxy, Huobi Global, and Hoo. Trading pairs include Tether (USDT), Bitcoin (BTC), and Ether (ETH).
