The big, pompous building on the Southern side of Unter den Linden appears at first glance to be a princely palace of the late 19th century. But if you take a closer look, you will find that hammer and sickle are integrated into the building decoration; and around the corners of the tower looming high over the neighbouring roofs you will find sculptures which represent strong working class people. Between 1949 and 1952, the Soviet Union was willing to spend money on a new embassy in East Berlin, which should not only underline its own position of power in the pretentious style of the Stalin era, but also support the recently founded East German state which was striving for international recognition.
