A Challenging Spark Plug Thread Repair

Buying a preowned vehicle nearly always comes with surprises. On the channel's time capsule Harley-Davidson XL1200S Sportster 'Sport', the eye opener was a set of stripped spark plug threads at the most difficult to access spark plug hole. The bike features rare Buell Lightning twin-plug cylinder heads, and repairing this recessed spark plug hole with the head in place is a major challenge. In this how-to video, I share my approach to restoring the cylinder head, using a stainless steel thread insert and the right specialty tools. The tools and insert kit cost less than a half hour's labor at a dealership. This restorative repair, performed on the engine, saved the hours that it would take to remove or replace the cylinder head. While a careless tuner nearly ruined this head, the threads and cylinder head have now been restored. The low mileage engine performs as new!
