Arvo Pärt wrote "Für Alina" originally for piano in 1976, but I felt that the composition might also work well on the theorbo, with theorbo's strange and unusual re-entrant tuning: many passages can be played almost entirely on open strings, if we transpose the work to D minor. "A blade of grass has the status of a flower", says Arvo Pärt in the wonderful video I've linked to below. On the theorbo, those flowers have a colour different from the luminescent lilies of the piano: now they have an earthy fragrance, darker petals and thornier stems. Für Alina was the first work to make use of Pärt's Tintinnabuli style (from the Latin tintinnabulum, "a bell"). On the piano, those bells are ethereal and bright, on the theorbo I imagine we can hear the tolling of ancient church bells, corroded by age, even broken, like us humans - but they nevertheless echo into eternity.
