Today, you are cordially invited to a very special tour of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery! Birger's OWN DAUGHTER - Margaret Sandzén Greenough - will be your guide on this tour, recorded on May 30, 1989. This is just the latest exciting VHS recording out of our museum archives, highlighting a series of oral histories recorded in the 1980s. Margaret leads us on a tour through several dozen works on display in the gallery in 1989 (many of which you can still see there today!) Subjects include early settlers and founding figures, Lindsborg residents, Bethany College football players, decorative tapestries, and complex sculptures. Central to the tour, of course, are Sandén's beautiful landscape and still life paintings and prints, proving the artist's bona fides as an "artist of light" in his work. In particular, notice at about 38:00 the image of Coronado Heights - painted before the Heights Castle was built! This is just one part of an ambitious set of oral history recordings under the direction of Elston Flohr, who was a member of the association's Board of Directors and part of the faculty of the Department of English, Theater and Speech at Bethany College. There are about 30 Beta and VHS cassette recordings in the series in our museum collection, plus many more audio cassette tapes. They were created out of a project by the Smoky Valley Historical Association - Kansas and are presented here with permission of the association. Digitization of these videos was made possible with a small Nutt grant from the McPherson County Community Foundation. #ToTheStarsKS #Lindsborg #lindsborgks #lbk #visitlindsborg #SmokyValley #KansasHistory #oralhistory #oralhistorymatters #oralhistoryproject #BethanyCollege #Sweden #SwedishImmigration #immigrationhistory #kansasart #kansasartist #ArtHistory #swedishart #swedisharthistory
