In this short video I show how I repaired the skylight mechanism handle which was required as teeth on both the handle and the mechanism shaft have worn away over the past 32 years. Symptom: Handle spinning and skylight not raising or lowering. Other Issues: Water ingress into habitation area from around the vertical shaft for the mechanism. Step 1. Remove the skylight. This can only be done from outside. There are four split pins the needs to be removed. Take care to note the locations of any wasters removed. Note original skylights can be easily destroyed during this step. Aging of the plastic can result in low strength highly brittle skylight. Step 2. Disassemble the winding mechanism. I stood on steps while standing in the habitation area. Step 3. Remove the handle. I believe the Allen head bolt holding the handle to the vertical shaft is 3 mm. See video on how to do this. Step 4. Remove the vertical shaft. This was very difficult for me as the shaft was heavily rusted resulting in significant effort required to remove. Step 5. Clean vertical shaft with wire brush and clean out the pipe the shaft fits into. Step 6. While shaft is still out drill 2.5 mm offset hole in shaft and corresponding hole in handle. Step 6. Measure dept of both holes. In may case that was 8 mm. Step 7. I used a 2.5 mm steel nail and cut to 8 mm long. Step 8. Install the vertical shaft and reassemble the mechanism. Step 9. Install the modified handle, taking care to align the steel nail into the two 2.5 mm holes, and reinstall the Allen head bolt. Step 10. Replace plastic cover on handle. Tools I used: 1x Set of Pliers to remove split pins. 1x ladder to get onto roof. 1x flat head screwdriver to remove mechanism. 1x 3 mm Allen head key. 1x 2.5 mm drill bit. 1x Cordless drill 1x 2.5 mm steel nail cut to size. 1x 4 1/4" Angle Grinder with cutting disc to cut steel nail. 1x pair safety glasses 1x pair of ear muffs Note that I did not remove the frame the mechanism is secured to as I did not have enough time to do so. I would highly recommend that think about this as it is little additional effort and the resealing benefits are worthy of the extra work. If you do plan to reseal the frame I recommend Carfax IDL 99 sealant, or similar, and I would never recommend a silicone or adhesive as the roof needs to expand and contract.
