Robert Glasper and his band featuring vocalist Bilal perform Miles Davis’ composition “Willie Nelson” from the trumpet legend’s landmark 1971 album Jack Johnson, filmed in May 2018 and broadcast on SFJAZZ's Fridays at Five streaming concert series on May 14, 2021. Explore all of SFJAZZ's digital offerings at https://www.SFJAZZ.org ABOUT THIS CONCERT The most prominent artist blurring lines between acoustic jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary R&B, GRAMMY-winning pianist and composer Robert Glasper returned in May 2018 with music from Everything’s Beautiful, his project devoted to re-conceptualized versions of Miles Davis compositions originating from his score to director and actor Don Cheadle’s 2015 Davis tribute film Miles Ahead. Like Davis, Glasper has been a driving force keeping the music moving forward, becoming a crossover star with his electro-acoustic Experiment band following the game-changing 2012 release Black Radio, which won that year’s GRAMMY for Best R&B Album. The Houston native and veteran of work with Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Christian McBride, and Terence Blanchard is joined for this show by a telepathic band including guitarist Michael Severson, bassist Burniss Travis, drummer Justin Tyson, and R&B star Bilal on vocals.
