It is like mailing address, which identifies where postal mail comes from and where it should be delivered. Internet Protocol (IP) is a set of rules that govern how data is sent and received over the internet. It is responsible for addressing and routing data packets so that they can travel from the source to the destination. IP ensures that data is sent to the correct address and helps route it across networks. Here are key points about IP: Every device connected to the internet is assigned a unique identifier called an IP address. It helps devices identify and communicate with each other. There are two main types: IPv4: The most widely used version, consisting of a 32-bit address IPv6: A newer version with a 128-bit address, designed to provide a much larger number of unique addresses, useful as more devices connect to the internet. IP addresses are mainly divided into two categories. that is, private IP addresses and public IP addresses. Public IP Addresses, assigned to a device directly accessible from the internet. Public IPs are assigned by an Internet Service Provider. Public IP addresses are publicly accessible from any public network such as Internet. In order to access Internet, we must have to use a Public IP address. Routing IP is also responsible for the routing of data, it ensures the most efficient path across networks, from one router to another until it reaches its destination. Connectionless Protocol is a "connectionless". because it doesn’t establish a dedicated connection before sending data. data packets are sent independently, and the system must handle any potential loss or delay. It Works with Transmission Control Protocol. Together, combination TCP and IP ensures reliable data transmission. While IP handles addressing and routing, TCP ensures the data packets are correctly reassembled and delivered reliably. IPv4 is the most common version, represented as four sets of decimal numbers. It uses a 32-bit address space, which offers approximately 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 is the newer version of IP, represented as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits. It uses a 128-bit address space, allowing for an extremely large number of unique addresses.
