This loss sent shockwaves throughout the hip-hop community. Groggs was and remains a diamond in the rough, coming up as a major talent in a city that, per the band’s own admission, has no rap scene. Phoenix, Arizona has produced no popular hip-hop artists of which to speak, until the day that Parker, Ritchie, and Groggs came together to leave their indelible mark, and set into motion an unbelievable trajectory. All this is to say that Injury Reserve never made sense, and they kind of still don’t. “Man, we look like rap Weezer,” Ritchie once quipped in an early track. Three more mismatched looking human beings could not possibly be put together. They could just as easily be chess champions, schoolteachers, medical students, or accountants, at first glance. And yet, these are the three people who, on their most recent album, pushed the genre to places I don’t think it’s ever been before.
