0:00 - Intro 1:25 - Mini puzzle 2:27 - Daily puzzle (by Ruth Bloomfield Margolin) 5:05 - Commentary New York Times Crossword, Tuesday 8/17/21 I liked the visual element to this theme, with each of NIB, TOE, BREAD, and WICK visually dipping through/into INDIAINK, SWIMMINGPOOL, CHEESEFONDUE, and PARAFFIN. One thing I noticed is that SWIMMINGPOOL is the only themer that doesn't refer to the actual liquid that is being dipped in (it should be WATER to be consistent with the rest). I guess also I'd say PARAFFIN wax rather than just PARAFFIN. But those are just minor quibbles. Overall I'd say that theme was a success. Glad to learn that Theda BARA was actually named Theodosia Burr after Aaron Burr's daughter. Hopefully this will help me remember her name in the future. The crossing of INTERLAKEN and OBERON might be kind of tough? I've been to INTERLAKEN and I've been studying up on Shakespeare so they were both in my wheelhouse. PHAEDRA another tough name in the grid. I think the SE corner is a little gnarly with AFL, IFIT, ANET, TKT, ASA all crammed in there. I wonder how hard that corner was to fill. Because each themer consisted of two parts, this puzzle did have a lot of theme material constraining the grid. 10s on the Mini and 2m38s on the daily puzzle.
