Self-Reconfigurable Micro-Implants

µmedIC is a new MIT technology for wireless and batteryless fully-integrated micro-implants. These micro-implants are intelligent and can reprogram themselves inside the body, and open up new capabilities in drug delivery, long-term monitoring, and early disease detection. µmedIC powers up by harvesting energy from wireless signals and communicates at net-zero power. It could be used for continuous monitoring of biomarkers and tumors, ultra-long lasting drug delivery systems (e.g., for patients with Alzheimer’s disease or osteoporosis), and closed-loop control systems with real-time feedback (e.g., artificial pancreas for diabetes patients). MIT researchers from the Signal Kinetics group and the Energy-Efficient Circuits and Systems Group have already designed, implemented and evaluated µmedIC in different tissues.
