Dartmoor witches, folklore, and true legends of Devon have haunted the moor for centuries. In this episode of our Dartmoor Folklore series, we explore the real stories behind the women once feared as witches — not fairy tales, but warnings shaped by isolation, superstition, and survival on the moor. From Vixiana, remembered for spite and vengeance, to Levera, the shape-shifting hare-witch of Dartmoor, and Old Moll of Chagford, whose name still lingers in Devon folklore, these stories reveal how fear turned ordinary women into legends. Unlike the mass witch trials seen elsewhere in Britain, Dartmoor’s witch tales rarely end in execution. Instead, they survive as whispered names, closed doors, and offerings left on thresholds — reminders of what happened to those who lived differently or knew too much. A journey into Dartmoor witchcraft, Devon folklore, and the dark history of the English moors.
