Extracapsular cataract surgery (ECCE) is a surgical procedure used to remove a cataract from the eye. During the procedure, the lens of the eye is removed, but the elastic capsule that surrounds it is left intact. The procedure may be performed when the cataract is too large or too hard to remove using phacoemulsification, which is a less invasive technique that involves breaking up the lens with ultrasound and removing it through a small incision. ECCE involves making a larger incision at the top of the eye to remove the cloudy lens. The surgeon will remove the lens in one piece or in several pieces, depending on the size and density of the cataract. After removing the lens, the surgeon will implant an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to replace it. ECCE is generally a safe and effective surgery, but as with any surgical procedure, there are some risks involved. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, inflammation, increased intraocular pressure, retinal detachment, and issues with the posterior capsule. It is important to discuss the benefits and risks of surgery with your ophthalmologist, who can help determine the best treatment plan for your individual needs.
