At the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts an innovative solution was devised for the movable orchestra shell in this multi-purpose auditorium. Unlike most demountable "diva" shells that can take a stage crew many hours to assemble and move, the Globe-News Center shell is constructed in a single piece and suspended from an overhead crane. It moves in and out of position in just four minutes by using a simple handheld remote control. Constructed of 3x12 inch glulaminated timbers and oriented strand board panels that exactly match the interior of the performance hall. The wood material was selected not only for its warm visual appeal, but also for its acoustical properties. Each individual shell panel, as well as the overall shape of the shell, was specifically designed to correctly reflect the sound waves produced by the symphony orchestra. For instance, the downstage panels are relatively flat and reflect sound immediately out into the hall, whereas the upstage panels have a pronounced shape to diffuse early sound reflections coming from behind the musicians. http://holzmanmossbottino.com/ http://amarillociviccenter.com/
