Fat grafting is one of the techniques that we have been using off late to treat scars. The scars may be in the face, maybe in the limbs, it may be in the neck, any visible part of the body or maybe in the hand. What this does is to replace the subcutaneous fat which has been damaged either due to accidents or due to burns or due to surgery or in some cases like acne where because of repeated attacks or deep attacks of infection of pimples the subcutaneous fat and subcutaneous tissue is damaged and there are multiple pits which are formed on the face. So fat grafting can be used to treat all these kind of depressed scars, atrophic scars, scars in which there is a damage to the subcutaneous layer either because of surgery, because of accident, because of burns. One of the things with the fat grafting is that they bring in stem cells and they are thought to improve the quality of the skin by reducing the kind of scarring that has happened in the first place. So fat grafting is one of the newer things that I've been doing you include that with something called as dermabrasion between post acne scarring or in post burn scarring on the face it is possible for us to improve the quality of scars to a very large extent. You need to meet a plastic surgeon who will tell you if your scar is appropriate for a fat grafting procedure. The thing about fat grafting is we are not fully aware of how to make all the entire volume of grafts survived. So the average range of survival is around 60%. The plastic surgeon may over correct it to some extent but you should remember that in certain cases there may be a need to repeat the fat grafting procedure the second time.
