After completing his flying training in Canada in 1941, he was posted to 218 Squadron at RAF Marham, serving as Navigator on Wellingtons and Stirlings, before being shot down on his 23rd operation over Holland on 21st June 1942. Following capture, he was sent to Dulag Luft and then to Stalag Luft 3 from where he took part in the gruelling Long March of POWs towards the end of WW2. Stuart Green (Alan's son) was also born in Coventry and has spent more than 35 years in the air transport industry in a variety of roles including flight dispatcher, operations duty officer, technical secretary for an international aviation organisation, flying instructor, captain on both the Boeing 737 and the Airbus 320 for a major UK airline. He is currently a part time university lecturer in air transport management and an optimistic Sky Blue fan!
