Spain and Portugal are rich in history. With the lifting of travel restrictions, we could visit these two countries. The first stop is Barcelona, one of the most desirable European cities for travellers. Basilica de La Sagrada Familia is one of her most famous buildings. This building is currently the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world. The construction started in 1882. The Knights Templar built the Peñíscola castle. We were treated to a scrumptious seafood lunch. Next is Valencia, well known for her football club. Seafood Paella, a rice dish, originates from Valencia. The Alhambra Palace in Granada is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture. Córdoba is well known for her Grand Mosque-Cathedral. This cathedral still celebrates Mass daily. In Seville, Christopher Columbus is buried in the majestic Seville Cathedral. The Giralda Bell Tower is once a minaret. From Seville, we entered Portugal. She was once a powerful maritime empire. The Portuguese sailed around the world. The Belem Tower is a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of continental Europe. Cascais, a traditional and charming Portuguese fishing village, is a premier holiday destination on the Lisbon coastline. From Lisbon, we reentered Spain. Salamanca is a key intellectual centre in the 15th-16th centuries. The university continues to attract international students to add to the city’s vibrancy. Segovia is famous for her Roman aqueduct and the castle of Walt Disney. The capital of Spain is Madrid. Madrid’s Royal Palace is the largest royal place in Europe. Finally, Toledo, a city known as the “City of Three Cultures,” Christians, Muslims and Jews. Overall, the trip created many fond memories.
