Indonesian filmmakers investigate why land conflicts are so widespread in their country. As they document the protests of communities resisting palm oil companies and real estate developers seizing their land, they uncover deep-rooted causes dating back to Indonesia’s colonial era. In the 19th century, Dutch colonial authorities claimed ownership of most of Indonesia’s land, drastically weakening the rights of ordinary Indonesians. This colonial legacy continues to fuel land disputes today. Because land rights remain limited for many Indonesians, the government is able to grant large tracts to private companies. When corporations encroach on these lands for plantations or real estate projects, local communities resist. However, their protests and road blockades often face heavy police repression and fail to stop the land grabs. Yet, after prolonged struggles, some communities succeed in reclaiming their land.
