Saline Valley Road has a long history rooted in mining and exploration. In the late 1800s, the road was developed to access the Saline Valley salt flats, where salt was harvested and transported. By the early 1900s, an aerial tramway was built one of the steepest ever constructed to carry salt over the Inyo Mountains to nearby towns. Miners, prospectors, and settlers traveled this rugged route, enduring harsh conditions to make a living.
