What happens when you take a 100-year-old family heirloom shotgun and transform it into a handcrafted legacy knife? Join Jeff Royer as he carefully disassembles, forges, and repurposes a treasured firearm into a functional piece of art called “Nana’s Little Helper.” This incredible build isn’t just about steel and fire, it’s about family history, craftsmanship, and honoring legacy through blade making. 00:00 – A Heirloom Transformed I introduce the 100-year-old family shotgun and talk about my vision to turn it into a lasting legacy. 00:13 – Disassembling the Shotgun I start breaking down the gun, sorting through parts, and figuring out how to turn steel and wood into a knife. 01:32 – Forging the Billet I flatten out the barrel steel and begin forge welding using my custom hydraulic press. 05:57 – Building the Blade Core I slip in a piece of 1084 high-carbon steel to make sure the blade has a strong, functional cutting edge. 07:25 – Heat Treating & Grinding Here I normalize, heat treat, and grind the blade down into its final shape. 11:39 – Range Brass Bolster For the bolster, I melt down spent .22 and .223 brass casings—thought it was a fitting tribute to the shotgun's past. 12:37 – Creating the Handle I shape the original walnut stock into a new handle, keeping the soul of the heirloom alive in the knife. 18:42 – Legacy Complete The knives are finished, etched, and paired with serial numbers.
