On The Floor + Tomorrow's Girls - UK SUBS ft. NICKY GARRATT (100 Club, Soho, London; 30th September 2023) Time Don't Matter At All... I first saw this band over 43 years ago with schoolmates Albert Bullen and Martin Snow. We weren't great mates, but we did share a common love for the music of our time nevertheless. The Subs release of 'Tomorrow's Girls' (purchased on clear blue vinyl) a few short months earlier as well as their 1st 'kin amazing LP, 'Another Kind Of Blues', and a saturday matinee show on a sunny day in April, was enough for moi to want to go to my 1st ever gig, despite most of the scary 1st generation punks being much larger... and taller than we three. The venue was the now defunct Greyhound Pub on the Fulham Palace Road. A coach load of Plod were being chaffeured past the pub presumely to go watch the football, so many of the bigger, cockier punks mooned them for a giggle whilst we all waited outside for the doors to open. The Old Bill being the Old Bill, didn't like that, so, unbeknowst to us, instead of marching on to police all the football mob, they parked up around the corner, probably Lillie Road. A few minutes later quite a few of their uniformed cohort came rushing back towards the front of the pub and hoiked out a couple of the biggest punks (who I presume were known to the police) for being a tad naughty with their respective backsides. Shortly after, the doors opened and all but a few who had gone astray and been led away, had a good, albeit riotous time with The Subs, Charlie Harper upfront with a mass of curly black hair and Nicky Garratt on lead geetar.... Then roll the cock forward 43 years, with Charlie Harper now a doppel-ganger for a mature, long blonde haired Paul Weller, and Nicky Garratt apparently, upfront and almost still on stage to film it all... perhaps time shouldn't matter at all.
