#unit01_ChemistryofBiomolecules #bsc2ndsemesterchemistry #bsc2semester #studyxpert This unit covers the fundamental concepts of Carbohydrates, their structure, classification, and chemical behavior. Carbohydrates are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones, or substances that yield such compounds on hydrolysis. They are one of the most essential biomolecules and serve as primary sources of energy in living organisms. The classification of carbohydrates is based on: • Monosaccharides – Simple sugars that cannot be hydrolyzed further (e.g., glucose, fructose). • Oligosaccharides – Contain 2–10 monosaccharide units (e.g., disaccharides like sucrose, maltose). • Polysaccharides – Long-chain polymers of monosaccharides (e.g., starch, cellulose, glycogen). Carbohydrates are also classified as: • Reducing Sugars – Sugars that have a free aldehyde or ketone group capable of reducing Fehling’s solution or Tollens’ reagent (e.g., glucose, lactose, maltose). • Non-Reducing Sugars – Sugars that do not have a free aldehyde or ketone group (e.g., sucrose). This unit helps students understand structural formulas, glycosidic linkage, ring structure (Haworth projection), mutarotation, and the chemical properties important for competitive exams and semester examinations. #Carbohydrates, #ReducingSugar, #NonReducingSugar, #BScChemistry, #OrganicChemistry, #Biomolecules, #Monosaccharides, #Polysaccharides, #GlycosidicBond, #ChemistryNotes carbohydrates, classification of carbohydrates, monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides, reducing sugar, non reducing sugar, glycosidic linkage, mutarotation, haworth projection, ring structure of glucose, fehling test, tollens test, b.sc 2nd semester chemistry, biomolecules unit 1, organic chemistry notes, carbohydrate chemistry, glucose structure, sucrose structure, lactose and maltose
