The Underdark. A vast system of caves and caverns that sprawl deep beneath the surface of Toril, home to all sorts of monsters and strange creatures. The Underdark is separated into 3 sections: The first 3 miles deep are called the “Upper Dark” and this is where most interactions between Surface Dwellers and the denizens of the Underdark occur. Between 3 and 10 miles under the surface is referred to as the “Middle Dark” this is where most of the cities are in the Underdark. And finally everything below 10 miles of the surface is referred to as the “Lower Dark” where even the inhabitants of the Underdark fear to go. This is our first Ambience exploring the vast Underdark, this one in a chasm located in the Upperdark. A passage from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide: Extending miles downward and outward beneath the surface of Faerûn, and reaching to other continents as well, the great network of subterranean caverns known as the Underdark is home to all manner of strange and deadly creatures. Duergar and drow — dark reflections of dwarves and elves — live in these sunless lands, as do the svirfneblin, or deep gnomes.
