Nurses may administer colloids for patients who experience hypovolemic shock, severe bleeding, burns, or low albumin levels in the blood. Colloids are different from crystalloids because they are larger, expand the intravascular space very quickly, but they tend to cost more and carry a risk of allergic reactions.
