In 2003, Candace George and her five children moved into a tidy brick Habitat-NYC row house in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. This hardworking family has cherished the opportunity to build and own their home -- using it as a foundation to transform their lives and bolster their community. The George family exemplifies the extraordinary benefits that homeownership can have. Before teaming up with Habitat-NYC, the George family lived in a one-bedroom, fifth-floor walk-up, where the rats were so familiar, the children gave them names. The family -- mom; daughter Soudea, then 12; son Pryce-Gary, 7; twins Elizabeth and Elijah, 5; and baby Daniel -- shared an apartment that, it turns out, was killing them. Daniel, who was rushed to the hospital several times, was diagnosed with a serious asthmatic condition spurred by the black mold growing in their home. Candace had already been accepted as a Habitat-NYC partner and had begun earning sweat equity toward her future home. But Habitat-NYC responded quickly to this life-threatening crisis, finding a temporary home for them in Queens. Since moving into their "green" Habitat-NYC home, Daniel has not had a single asthma attack. The entire family breathes a lot easier now, the children are all doing well in school and big sister Soudea is attending a private college on scholarship. She aspires to enter politics and law. Candace, who works for the city's Department of Social Services, plans to go to law school someday, specializing in public interest law. "To open a gate and walk inside gives you such a positive feeling," Candace says. "It's not only for the children. It motivates you to do more for yourself and your community." Candace, Soudea, Pryce-Gary, Elijah, Elizabeth and Daniel welcome you into their home to see how Habitat-NYC has changed their lives. Video production by Stephanie Lear and Matt Epstein. Music composed by Christopher Occhialini. A special thanks to Candace, Soudea, Pryce, Elijah, Elizabeth and Daniel, and everyone who helped them achieve their goal of home ownership.
