Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night in the Week) Music by Jule Styne lyrics by Sammy Cahn The Readers Digest Songbook "Parade of Popular Hits" says: During World War II, many songs aimed themselves directly at the loneliness of soldiers, sailors and marines abroad and their wives and sweethearts back home. This is one of those songs. No doubt, former GIs, now graying at the temples and spreading out somewhat in the middle, still recall listening to “Saturday Night (Is the Loneliest Night in the Week)” on the post exchange jukebox, or a jukebox in a bar or Elks club in the town next to their camp, and fighting to hold back the tears. The tune was one of the early successes of the songwriting team of Sammy Khan and Jule Styne, who had many hits together. Going their separate ways, Styne had a tremendous carrier on Broadway (including Gypsy), and Khan was equally successful in Hollywood, where he teamed up with Jimmy van Heusen for many Frank Sinatra hits. Both men had a most productive relationship with Sinatra, who recorded “Saturday Night” in New York in November 1944 and saw and heard it become a winner. New videos every Monday and Thursday.
