They don’t exactly rank among Marvel’s A-list in terms of name recognition, but it seems that Disney and Kevin Feige and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brain trust are banking a lot on them being a crossover hit in the manner of Guardians of the Galaxy. And with Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao at the helm, and a seriously heavyweight cast - including the likes of Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry and Richard Madden - they could potentially be right! But first things first - who exactly the heck are these guys and gals? Legendary comics creator Jack Kirby invented them in the 1970s after returning to Marvel, having had his epic mythological sci-fi series New Gods cancelled by DC before it could conclude. Clearly still in a crazy mythological sci-fi frame of mind, he created the Eternals, a similarly epic saga encompassing all of recorded history, infused with psychedelic, religious and space opera elements. The story never concluded (what, not again!!!!!), but the characters were incorporated into wider Marvel lore, even becoming part of the creation myth of the entire universe!
