Manoj Maharjan is an aspiring actor known for his appearance in songs like Aila Luwaya, Salugu Gacha, Maya Madula, Makha Twa Ya Gwa: etc. He is also loved for his acting in videos by Jyasa films, vines and Newa short movies. During, 56th session of The Storyyellers, Manoj shared his journey about exploring his identity, finding purpose, and using his passion to make a difference. When Manoj was a little kid, he was looking through his family’s photo album and came across a picture of his dad in a police uniform. Overjoyed, he thought his dad was a real police officer. The next day at school, he excitedly told all his classmates, “My dad is a police officer! So, no one should mess with me!” and bragged about it. Later that day, when Manoj got home, he asked his mom, “Mom, why doesn’t Dad wear his uniform anymore? Did he quit being a police officer?” His mom laughed and explained, “Your dad was never a real police officer. That picture was from a play he acted in.” It was the first time Manoj had heard about plays, and the idea stuck with him. Around that time, Manoj had a close friend with whom he roamed around the entire village. But one day, his friend didn’t come to play. When he finally did, as they walked around, someone pointed at Manoj’s friend and said, “Hey, isn’t that the boy from the play?” Manoj learned that his friend had acted in a local play in their village, Khokana. Seeing how everyone recognized and praised his friend, Manoj thought, “I wish I could be famous like that.” This was his second strike with the world of acting. One day, while playing games on cyber, a member from an NGO invited Manoj and his friends to join a street play. They decided to give it a try. After a few rehearsals, they performed in different areas, and during one performance, Manoj noticed the audience laughing at his character. It made him incredibly happy, and for the first time, he realized he had the ability to make people laugh. This was the moment when his passion for acting started to get its shape. As Manoj grew older, he got involved in more street plays. One day, after performing a play about struggling farmers at Maitighar Mandala, an elderly man handed him 70 rupees and said, “Thank you for telling our story. We do not know if the Government will address our issues but at least you gave a voice to our problems. So, thank you.” That’s when Manoj realized he couldn’t just make people laugh—he could also be a voice for others. What happened next? To find out, watch the full video.
