Bungalow Bill was written by John Lennon in India during the Beatles’ trip in spring of 1968. The song was inspired by an American visitor who took a break from meditation to kill tigers. John combined a character named Jungle Jim with Buffalo Bill. The ironic part of the song was that despite John’s hatred for Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, he then went on to produce another sing along song that follows a similar feel to that song. The song, like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, consists of two different tunes only connected by a couple beats on the drums. The recording for the song was relatively smooth. Recording for the song was all done on October 8th, 1968. John had everybody in the studio take part and recordings were intentionally sloppy. The song featured Maureen Starkey, Ringo’s wife, on backing vocals. The song is the first time someone besides a Beatles sings a lead vocal part. Yoko takes part in a brief lead vocal part and backing vocals for the majority of the song. George Martin’s assistant, Chris Thomas played the Mellotron on this song. He switched from a trombone setting to a mandolin setting and blends it with a string setting towards the end of each verse. The Beatles always used a Mellotron Mark ll. The Spanish Guitar intro was not a real guitar recorded by the band but a sample patch found on the Mellotron. This sound is made by holding the lowest note on the Mellotron while it’s in the trombone setting. The Mellotron part as a whole is quite easy. The Mellotron has an A B and C settings so Chris Thomas played the trombone setting for the intro, the mandolin/string setting for the verses and so on. This is my second time making this video as I originally claimed that this song did not include the Hammond organ John is credited as to playing. With the help of more isolated tracks, I have discovered that I was wrong, there really is a Hammond organ on the song. It is too really easy as it’s just playing the progression alongside the Mellotron. I used the Mellotron XL app on IOS for the trombone sound and used the Streetlytron app, also on IOS, for the mandolin/string part. For the Hammond organ, I used the Numa Player app on the organ setting and I picked the “Full set B3”. You need the make sure the rotary is off. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill was released on November 22 1968 on the Beatles White Album.
