Vienna Humanities Festival 2019 Márton Gulyás in conversation with Dessy Gavrilova This event was recorded on 28 September 2019 at Wien Museum. When communism ended in Hungary in 1989, it was the victory of dissident movements against an oppressive regime – of liberal democracy over totalitarianism. Thirty years forward, and those born around 1989 feel the urge to resist the oppression of a government that’s installing an illiberal regime in the country. Viktor Orbán, its all-mighty prime minister, was a liberal dissident in the 1980s and was himself involved in the political upheaval of 1989. What went wrong? In a conversation with Time to Talk’s Dessy Gavrilova, Hungarian civic activist Márton Gulyás, the country’s most influential political youtuber, reflects on the necessity and strategies for political change in his country.
