Department S - another of Lew Grade's much-loved action adventure series that was made for the ITV network by ATV/ITC between April 1968 and June 1969. This British cult TV classic starred Peter Wyngarde as author and part time sleuth Jason King. King's main trademark was that he, ever the self-confident dandy, wore utterly outlandish clothes. Strangely nobody seemed to snigger. King was supported by two excellent accomplices, Annabelle Hurst played by Rosemary Nicols and Stewart Sullivan played by American actor Joel Fabiani. Their boss was Curtis Seretse played by Dennis Alaba Peters - a Gambian actor who studied economics at Cambridge and at one stage was a BBC reporter. Only one series was produced but Lew Grade, though never being a fan of the show, saw the potential for a spin-off series and so Wyngarde reprised his Department S character in the follow-up series 'Jason King' in the early seventies, this time sporting a wig (to save two hours of hairstyling every day) and even more ridiculously camp clothes. Sadly neither Rosemary Nicols nor Joel Fabiani were brought back for the follow-up series. The sizzlingly brilliant Department S theme tune was written by Edwin Astley, a British composer who wrote a number of cult television theme tunes including The Saint and Danger Man. Department S was shown widely around the world. Its Spanish title was Departamento S and in French it was Département S - nothing surprising there!. ____________________________________________________________ Disclaimer: I do not claim any copyright in the broadcast, the images or the music composition or performance.
