Video Essay exploring the coded historical allegory in the Tarantino film Pulp Fiction Video Essay| Film Analysis| Pulp Fiction Upon its release, Pulp Fiction was instantly recognised as being a film that has a highly postmodern style, and this aspect of the film continues to be explored by film theorists . Pulp Fiction does indeed have a number of postmodern elements: The abundance of intertextual references, drawing from both high and low culture, is one of the film’s most notable qualities. The film itself is a pastiche of the pulpy, kitschy, schlocky, mass-produced B-movies and pulp fiction literature of the mid-20th century. The Jackrabbit Slims scene itself is one of the most exemplary illustrations of this gathering together of cultural references in one place that cinema has to offer. The apex of what Jameson excoriates as the postmodern fascination with the: ‘degraded’ landscape of schlock and kitsch, of TV series and Readers’ Digest culture, of advertising and motels, of the late show and the grade-B Hollywood film, of so-called paraliterature with its airport paperback categories of the gothic and the romance, the popular biography, the murder mystery and science fiction or fantasy novel. Not only is Pulp Fiction recognised as being a postmodern artefact, Tarantino himself is vocal about the influence of postmodern filmmakers, like Jean-Luc Godard and Brian DePalma , on his own work and on his approach to cinema. The dance sequence in Jackrabbit Slim, Tarantino has revealed, is inspired by a dance sequence in Godard’s Bande a Parte – the film even lends its name to the production company that made Pulp Fiction. However, these dance sequences share very little in common tonally or stylistically – the way that they are shot, choreographed, and presented are markedly different. Godard’s voice narrates over the dancing characters in Bande a Parte, and there are three of them dancing. Tarantino made this comment, in my view, to draw attention to the influence of Godard, and the French New Wave, on his work, in terms of broadening the philosophical and narrativistic implications of cinema. In doing so, he is situating Pulp Fiction as an inheritor of this movement and as a film that should be understood as such. Although Tarantino has described Godard as a major influence, he has also claimed to have moved on from him after feeling that Godard’s films helped him reach a new place – as in, an advancement in his filmmaking sensibilities. Therefore, it would be too muddled to analyse Tarantino as a strictly Godardian filmmaker. Godard, through his inventive, rule-breaking filmmaking, demonstrated to a younger Tarantino what cinema can be, and this debt is acknowledged, and evident in his work and career. “It’s as if a couple of movie-mad Frenchmen took a banal American crime novel and wrote down the poetry that they read between the lines” – this is a review of Bande A Parte that clicked with Tarantino; and, when he read it, he thought: that’s what I want to do. Pauline Kale’s comment has been described by Tarantino as the most influential piece of film criticism that he ever read. Furthermore, Tarantino is also somebody who advances, and seeks to popularise, the idea that classic films can have underlying, covert narratives that are not immediately recognisable – arguably, this is not distinct from his being a postmodernist, but he does not necessarily always contextualise this idea within a postmodernist framework. Although he did not originate the theory, Tarantino uses a scene in Inglorious to articulate the perspective that King Kong is an allegory for the condition of Black people in America .
