An Anticholinergic Agent is a drug that acts on the parasympathetic nervous system. It blocks the mechanism of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) which promotes relaxation of the smooth muscles in the airways of the lungs. This is why it’s effective in treating bronchospasm, and many patients with respiratory conditions are treated with both Anticholinergic Agents and Beta-2 Agonists. ➡️ Types of Anticholinergic Bronchodilators: ▪ Short-Acting Anticholinergic Agents ▪ Long-Acting Anticholinergic Agents ▪ Ultra-Long-Acting Anticholinergic Agents Short-Acting Anticholinergic Agents are known as "rescue drugs" because they are used to treat acute bronchospasm. For example, an acute asthma attack. Long-Acting Anticholinergic Agents are known as "maintenance medications" because they are used to control and maintain conditions that cause chronic bronchospasm. An example would be patients with stable asthma or COPD who are not having an acute episode or exacerbation. Ultra-Long-Acting Anticholinergic Agents have a similar mechanism of action as the long-acting agents. If a patient were having an acute attack, a short, fast-acting bronchodilator would be indicated for immediate help.
