Confounding Majors Disasters in 2019–2020

In 2019-2020, major devastating disasters such as COVID-19, Australia bushfires, locust swarms in East Africa, earthquakes, droughts, and floods, all occurred and some were recurrent in certain geographical regions. Confounding co-factors complicate efforts to understand, identify, assess, and reduce disaster risks. This is particularly important with extreme weather-related disasters under a changing climate and land cover and land use changes in a rapid global urbanization trend.
