In 2019-2020, major devastating disasters such as COVID-19, Australia bushfires, locust swarms in East Africa, earthquakes, droughts, and floods, all occurred and some were recurrent in certain geographical regions. Confounding co-factors complicate efforts to understand, identify, assess, and reduce disaster risks. This is particularly important with extreme weather-related disasters under a changing climate and land cover and land use changes in a rapid global urbanization trend. This interdisciplinary session will cover a wide range of coupled disasters from the fundamental science behind anomalous and/or recurring events, early warning systems, disaster mitigation and adaptation, as well as cutting-edge technologies for disaster relief, to socioeconomic impacts. -Beyond Flood Extent: Augmenting Near-real-time Remote Sensing with Water Depth and Impact Assessment Tools -Physics of the virus and why it matters -Regional climate feedback exacerbating wildfires in western United States -Crowdsourced Data Assisting Disaster Relief Practices in the Era of Social Sensing -Flash Droughts: Changing the Drought Early Warning Paradigm -Radon Monitoring in Gulf of Corinth, Greece.
