Europe’s First Commercial VTOL Takes Shape as Valo, Aiming for 2028 Launch Vertical Aerospace has officially unveiled the commercial name and updated design of what is set to become Europe’s first operational electric vertical take off and landing aircraft. Formerly known as the VX4, the pioneering eVTOL will now carry the name Valo. This marks a major milestone not only for the company but for the future of urban air mobility across the continent. The announcement also came with details about major improvements in performance, engineering, and mission capability. The Valo is the result of a collaboration involving industry leaders such as Honeywell, Syensqo, and Aciturri. Together, they’ve reshaped the prototype into a sleeker, more aerodynamic aircraft featuring a redesigned wing and propeller layout and improved efficiency. One of the most notable engineering updates is the relocation of the battery system. The Valo now carries eight liquid cooled battery packs installed beneath the cabin floor. These packs power eight electric motors and can be recharged for short missions in as little as twelve minutes. Future iterations may receive even more powerful battery technology. Current performance estimates give the Valo a flying range of up to one hundred miles on a single charge and a top speed of one hundred fifty miles per hour. This makes it especially suitable for short haul air routes like airport to city transfers. The initial configuration will carry four passengers, with larger versions expected later on capable of seating six. Payload capacity reaches twelve hundred pounds, stored within the largest cargo bay of any aircraft in its class. This week, the first full scale Valo prototype was revealed at Canary Wharf. Vertical Aerospace will now build seven more prototypes to undergo certification testing with both the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. The company aims to achieve Type Certification by 2028, which will allow full scale production and delivery to customers. With over fifteen hundred pre orders already placed, interest is extremely strong. Major airlines like American Airlines and Japan Airlines have committed to early adoption, alongside operators such as Avolon, Bristow, and GOL. Vertical Aerospace also plans to use the Valo platform beyond passenger transport. The aircraft is being envisioned for emergency medical flights, cargo operations, and even defense applications. This may lead to future versions featuring hybrid propulsion, extended range, and autonomous flight capability. While specific details have not yet been revealed, Vertical has confirmed that multiple variants are already in development. The Valo represents a bold new chapter for Europe’s aviation industry. It symbolizes the merging of sustainability, efficiency, and advanced engineering, all while offering a glimpse of how urban transportation could evolve in the near future.
