Realising opportunity on Country through the Abandoned Mines Program Presented by Tara Read, General Manager Abandoned Mines Program Western Australia’s rich mining history has resulted in a complex legacy of abandoned mine features across the State. Over the past decade, the Abandoned Mines Program (AMP), funded through the Mining Rehabilitation Fund, has evolved into a strategic initiative that not only addresses the safety and environmental risks posed by these legacy sites, but also actively engages with regional communities and Traditional Owners, aiming to deliver broader social and economic outcomes. This presentation explores how we are transforming legacy liabilities into opportunities through collaborative projects such as Safer Shafts for Towns and Ellendale. These initiatives demonstrate how targeted engagement can enhance community safety while fostering Indigenous partnerships, supporting skill development, and enabling local economic participation. Our approach embodies a deep commitment to working on Country in ways that are inclusive, respectful and grounded in a shared vision for the future. By inviting community engagement and integrating technical expertise we are building safer landscapes and stronger futures for all Western Australians. AMP’s evolution over the past decade highlights how legacy mine rehabilitation can be a catalyst for positive change, delivering long-term value for people and place.
