The European Parliament is exerting pressure to abandon Russian fossil fuel | Tomasz Włostowski

Tomasz Włostowski, Managing Partner at EU Strategies, says Europe’s move to ban Russian energy is reshaping geopolitics — once it’s done, there’s really no going back. The European Parliament wants to end Russian gas imports by January 2027, while EU member states prefer January 2028. Usually, Brussels compromises halfway, but the Parliament is pushing hard to keep the earlier date. Some countries like Hungary and Slovakia still rely on Russian energy and don’t want to rush the cutoff. Others aren’t against the idea but worry about how to legally end existing contracts with Russian suppliers. Włostowski notes that once this new law passes, it will be almost impossible for Russian energy to come back to Europe.
