.Explored 2026 .History Accrington Victoria Hospital, affectionately known as "The Viccy," was founded in 1894 on Haywood Road, Accrington, originally as a voluntary cottage hospital funded by community subscriptions. It served the community for over 130 years, undergoing major expansions in the 1920s and 1930s, before closing in late 2024 due to building safety concerns. Key Historical Facts: Foundation & Funding: Opened following Queen Victoria's Jubilee, it was heavily supported by local workers and fundraising, including the Accrington Carnival. Development: Expanded in 1919, 1928, 1932, and 1938, with a significant extension in 1926 for staff quarters. Facilities: In its prime, it featured a twin operating theatre (1973) and a two-roomed X-ray department (1975), maintaining 135 beds. Closure: In October 2024, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust announced the closure of the site due to it being "beyond repair" with issues like collapsing ceilings, asbestos, and broken boilers. Legacy: The Trust pledged not to demolish the building but to preserve its historic facade, with public exhibitions in 2025 celebrating its, often, 40+ year service to local staff and residents. The site, known for its strong community ties and "family atmosphere," is being considered for redevelopment to provide a new, safe legacy for the town.
