Although this hymn is sometimes sung to Abbot's Leigh, I prefer this tune (Austria), not least because it was composed by maestro Haydn. Having been somewhat eclipsed in the public estimation by his pupil Ludwig van Beethoven, it is easy to forget what a colossal influence Haydn had on classical music; and to this day his string quartets have never been excelled. Not only so, but he was also a born-again believer, having a profound yet simple faith in Jesus Christ, to which he witnessed by consistently ending his works with the inscription 'Laus Deo', praise God. The hymn was written by John Newton (1725-1807), one of the most influential figures of the 18th century who, as a converted slave ship master, demonstrated to the nation what it meant to be "saved by grace", as indeed is the theme of his signature song "Amazing Grace". After this turning point in his life he became a humble, sweet pastor, wholly non-judgmental in outlook, yet spurred on by his driving passion to end the slave trade. This he achieved, after a long campaign with William Wilberforce, to whom he acted as spiritual father. The hymn is a setting of Psalm 87: "The Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God."
